bullet  General Notes:

Captain French was a founding member of the town of Victoria (from the area called Westmorland) along with brother Tom. For the 70 years after his immigration, the French family were the carpenters, boat builders, wheelwrights, home builders and church builders in the area. Jim was also active as a whaler in the North Atlantic, and a farmer. Captain James daughter-in-law, Barbara Holm, apparently mentioned to a cousin, that he was a pirate. Some thought is had that Jim was born at sea, as there are difficulties in finding his birth records in his home of Cornwall. This would result in tragic irony, as he was lost at sea in 1850, presumably in the waters of Indonesia.
