Janet Ainslie 134
From "Monumental Inscriptions of the Upper Wards of Lanarkshire " compiled by Sheila Scott MA, a memorial stone was raised by James in memory of his wife in the New Lanark cemetery. :- Janet Ansle, w. Of James Carruthers, mason New Lanark died 22nd July 1807 aged (31). Although a different spelling of her name is recorded it is clearly the same person her age however would have been 51 years and not 31 years. Severe weathering of the memorial no doubt accounted for Ms Scott placing her age within brackets. The location of the grave would give rise to the belief that either James or Janet were employed in the New Lanark cotton mill at the time. "The Records of the Carruthers family" intimated that James died at Lanark in 1822.
Janet married James Carruthers of Woodhead, son of David Carruthers of Woodhead and Janet Johnstone of Mid Murthat, on 3 Jan 1775 in Moffat, Dumfries, Scotland. (James Carruthers of Woodhead was born on 11 Jun 1732 in Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfries, Scotland and died in 1822 in Lanark, Scotland.)
